EMDR Intensives
Focused healing, on your timeline
Traditional weekly therapy works well for many people. Sometimes, though, you're ready to do deeper work and don't want to wait months to feel the difference. EMDR Intensives offer concentrated, extended sessions over a few days, so you can move through difficult memories with more momentum and spend less time reopening and closing painful material week to week.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-researched, structured therapy that helps the brain process distressing memories and experiences that feel "stuck." Using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or tones, EMDR helps reduce the emotional charge of those memories. The event isn't forgotten, but it stops feeling like it's happening all over again. Many people find that old triggers lose their grip and that they can think about the past with more calm and perspective.
What is an EMDR Intensive?
Instead of 50-minute weekly sessions, an intensive gives you a single, 6-hour, day-long session that condenses multiple weeks of standard EMDR into one focused block of treatment. That longer time lets you:
Settle into the work without watching the clock
Process a memory more fully before the session ends
Make meaningful progress in days or weeks rather than months
Leave each session grounded and resourced, with time built in for closure
Who might benefit?
EMDR Intensives can be a good fit if you:
Are working through a specific trauma, loss, or distressing experience
Feel stalled in traditional talk therapy and want to go deeper
Struggle with anxiety, panic, phobias, or performance fears tied to past experiences
Have a busy or unpredictable schedule that makes weekly therapy hard to maintain
Are already in therapy and want focused EMDR work alongside your current therapist
Want to prepare for or recover from a major life transition
Is an Intensive Right for Everyone?
Not always, and that's okay. Before scheduling, every client completes a pre-intensive consultation and assessment so we can make sure an intensive is safe and appropriate for you. For some people, a slower, weekly pace is a better starting point, and we'll talk honestly with you about which approach will serve you best.
What to expect
1. Consultation call. A brief call to talk about your goals and answer your questions.
2. Pre-intensive consultation & history. Here we will review our practice policies, gather history, identify a target memory, and make sure you have strong coping and grounding skills in place before processing begins. We will also discuss the post-intensive plan.
3. Your intensive. A single, 6-hour, day-long session with built-in breaks, in a calm, private setting at our Glastonbury office. The 8-phase protocol remains the same; what changes is the pacing, the depth of single-session targeting, and your capacity to stay in the work without the weekly stop-start.
4. Integration and follow-up. A follow-up session helps you reflect on changes, address anything that came up afterward, and plan next steps. If you have an outside therapist, we're happy to coordinate care with your permission.
Frequently asked questions
Is an intensive more overwhelming than weekly therapy?
Intensives are carefully paced. Your clinician monitors how you're doing throughout, uses breaks and grounding strategies, and makes sure you leave each day feeling stable.
Can I do an intensive if I already have a therapist?
Yes. Many clients use an intensive as a focused complement to ongoing therapy. With your consent, we can communicate with your therapist to support continuity of care.
Is this covered by insurance? How much does it cost?
Insurance covers the pre-intensive and post-intensive follow-up sessions (Anthem, Aetna, and Cigna only), and we will file claims accordingly. Clients are responsible for their deductibles, copayments, and/or coinsurance.
The 6-hour intensive is self-pay and requires full payment at least 3 days prior to the intensive day. The 6-hour intensive day costs $1,575. If a client wishes to attend subsequent intensive days, we offer them at a 20% discount ($1,260 per day).
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer EMDR intensives to Husky clients.
Can I do an intensive virtually?
Intensives are currently offered only in person at our office in Glastonbury, CT.
