The need for qualified mental health counselors and therapists rises every day. Most states require students to intern before being able to graduate and enter the field. With this influx of new mental health professionals into the field, you may find yourself with the opportunity to receive care from an intern.
The thought of receiving therapy or counseling from someone not yet licensed might make some of us nervous, but there are plenty of reasons to feel comfortable seeing an intern for mental health treatment.
Willingness to Ask Questions
While an intern may not have years of practice, they will always be supervised by an experienced counselor. Most states require that this supervisor have several years of experience as well as licensing in the appropriate fields. An intern will be more willing to ask questions and use the various educational resources at their disposal. They have a learning and growth mindset.
In some cases, having less experience can be an advantage for an interning therapist or counselor. They are less likely to have had a case similar to yours in the past. While a true professional will treat each client on an individual basis, some clinicians who see large numbers of similar cases may be tempted to overlook factors unique to each person. An intern, however, will have fresh eyes and be able to provide specialized care.
Smaller Caseload
Since most interns are full time students and need supervision, they will usually have a smaller number of cases to handle. This means more time to prepare for sessions, which leads to more individualized care. In addition, they may also have more flexibility to adapt to your unique schedule.
Energy and Enthusiasm
After going through several years of schooling, no one will be more excited to meet you than an intern. They are finally able to apply the extensive education they have received and start to work on real cases with real people. The energy they bring to the field is contagious and you will be able to sense their enthusiasm in each session.
Up to Date Training
Interns will have the most current training fresh in their minds. Of course, all counselors are required to stay up to date on the latest research and treatment methods through continuing education. Interns, however, are studying that new information for several hours a week. They also are not trying to relearn old habits and techniques that may be outdated.
In some cases, counselors who have not innovated or changed with the times may be continuing to use older approaches that are not as effective. On the other hand, those who have followed the research will take a more evidence-based approach that has been shown to be more effective.
Lower Cost
Since interns are working for free, most agencies or clinics often will not charge for their sessions or offer them at a much lower rate. The cost of therapy or counseling can vary greatly depending on the experience, reputation, and specialization of the professional. Using an intern can be a fantastic way to get great care at much lower cost, or perhaps even for free.
Additionally, most organizations have a waiting list. Seeing an intern may be the quickest way to receive treatment, where you would otherwise have to wait.
